Manitoba Connects in Quebec City

December 01, 2009

ANIM, Manitoba's bilingual trade agency has just returned from a productive trade mission in Quebec. From November 18-20, 2009, ANIM led a delegation of 17 Manitoba based video game development and production companies to Quebec City for two days of networking and business to business meetings.

The event was organized by Pôle Québec Chaudière-Appalaches, Quebec City's economic development
agency. Some of the Manitoba companies participating included Project Whitecard, Complex Games Inc., Fortune Cat Games Studio and Debreuil Digital Works. While Quebec City, Montreal and Vancouver may be recognized as hubs for the games industry and film production in Canada, Manitoba is emerging as a player with many world-class companies making a name for themselves at home and abroad.

Debreuil Digital Works is a good example of a Manitoba-based company playing on the world stage. From Fox Sports baseball ads to Xbox Live, the Debreuils work with customers from the U.S. and all over the world. They are thrilled with their business to business match making experience in Quebec City. Computer animator Robin Debreuil says the event was a resounding success. "L'ANIM has good connections in Quebec. They know the companies there and they can tell us what could be a good match."

Manitoba's strong film and television community was also well represented in Quebec City. With the support of On Screen Manitoba, ANIM was joined by Buffalo Gal Pictures, Eagle Vision and Production Rivard to name a few. "There are a lot of similarities between Winnipeg and Quebec City," says Claudia Garcia de la Huerta, Programs Manager at On Screen Manitoba. "By promoting Manitoba as a centre for
Francophone production outside of Quebec, we hope to attract even more opportunities to the province."

The Federal government announced 2.5 million dollars last week to do just that. The funding will help Access, a new On Screen project, strengthen Manitoba's Aboriginal and Francophone film production communities.

The Quebec City trade mission consisted of a speed-dating format in which companies participate in prearranged one-on-one meetings with businesses with whom partnerships might be possible. This business to business model is coming to Winnipeg next year on a much larger scale. In October 2010, ANIM is organizing Centrallia 2010, a global forum that will see more than 500 small to medium sized businesses from around the world gather for one of the largest and most important international trade forums in Canada next year. Registration for the event begins soon. For more information on Centrallia 2010 visit www.centrallia.com.
